The Kananda Collection of original Indian Cinema Hoardings

Kananda curates what we believe to be the largest collection of hand painted oil on canvas Indian cinema hoardings in the UK.

We have been sourcing and collecting such pieces over a period of 8 years, and as far as we can ascertain, have the most comprehensive collection anywhere outside of India.  These cover the golden age of Indian cinema from 1949 to 1975, and include some of the most recognisable and iconic images from Indian film.  We are also in possession of a considerable collection of original vinyl recordings of the soundtracks to these films and a small collection of publicity booklets and song lyric pamphlets.

We invite proposals from organisations who might wish to utilise this collection in the form of an exhibition, film festival or cultural event. Events can be planned according to the specific needs of the client, and we welcome all proposals. Add-on events and back-up material can also be arranged, if required.

Please see below for past exhibitions.

Nottingham South Asian Arts Festival 2005

July 2005 saw the first ever exhibition in the UK of the Kananda Collection of classic Bollywood Cinema Hoardings. The exhibition, held at the Royal Centre in Nottingham, was part of the Nottingham South Asian Arts Festival, organised by the Nottingham Asian Arts Council and City Arts. The two-week exhibition also featured a season of classic and contemporary Indian cinema, including Black, Mother India and the new colourised version of Mughal-e-Azam. Guest speaker was    Broadcaster, Novelist and Music Critic, Jameela Siddiqi

WOMAD 2006

"A nightclub in an art gallery"....The Kananda Collection of Indian cinema hoardings became both decor and exhibition at our flagship venue, the Bombay Picture Palace, showcased at WOMAD 2006. The hoardings were displayed as if in an art gallery, and visitors could learn about the artform by watching a hoardings painter at work, as well as by reading the accompanying exhibition notes. By night, the hoardings provided a vibrant backdrop to live musicians and DJs, including Nerm from the BBC Asian Network.
